Origin
1. Shankaracharya Jayanti is a Hindu festival which is celebrated by millions of Hindus every year.
2. It is celebrated on the day of Vaisakh Shukla Paksha Panchami.
3. This festival is dedicated to the birth of Adi Shankaracharya, who was a great Hindu Guru and philosopher.
4. It falls on 23rd April 2017.
Significance
1. Shankaracharya taught the principle of Advaita Vedanta.
2. He also studied and dissected the main principles of the Brahma Sutras, Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads.
3. Shankaracharya criticized the emphasis on strict rituals and ceremonies, which some schools of Hinduism advocated.
4. Although he acknowledged the greatness of the Vedas, he interpreted them differently and condemned some of its ancient ritualistic practices; which he thought as being regressive.
5. The form of Hinduism which is practiced in today’s India is influenced by Shankaracharya’s teachings.
6. He travelled all across the country to preach his doctrines and revive Hinduism.
7. Shankaracharya was also a great devotee of Lord Shiva.
8. His most famous literary work is the Bhaja Govindam.
Rituals
1. Fasting for a day.
2. Worshiping Lord Shiva, Vishnu, Ganesh, Surya and Devi.
3. Reciting the Bhagavad Gita and other Hindu mantras.
4. Feeding Brahmans as a charitable act.
