ISKCON Youth Club

Hey folks,

  • Wanted to share my exuberant experience at ISKCON, Bangalore which changed the way I thought about chanting. Held by ISKCON volunteers for persons above 18 years. We are referred to FOLKS an abbreviation for Friends Of Lord Krishna. We as folks have permission to enter through a special gate, opportunity to have direct darshan of all the deities from the closest distance ( we can have darshan of Lord from a distance of just 2 meters, sit there as long as we want, witness the arthi and be blessed by his (Krishna) presence. We folks are divided into several small groups each guided by a folk guide.
We have a small interaction with our folk guide for about 30 to 40 minutes where are taught the meanings of excerpts from Bagavadh-gita (narrated by Sri Krishna 5000 years ago during the epic battle of Kurukshethra between the Pandavas and Kauravas) , small activities for relaxation and fortunately I was taught the proper way/method of mantra chanting using tulasi beads (a japa mala of 108 + 1 bead (s) in total) the way it has to be held in our hand, and the process of counting. I'd like to share some facts with you on mantra chanting ethics,

One starts on the smaller of the 2 beads next to the Krishna bead, holding it with the thumb and the middle finger, and chants the mantra, while rolling the bead with those fingers. After finishing the mantra, one proceeds to the next bead, opposite the Krishna bead, and chants the mantra on that one, then goes around the circle of beads as such to finish a ‘round’. It is recommended to chant 16 rounds like this each day.

  • The way to chant is with attention and focus, to listen carefully to the sound vibration. Notice how it sounds. You don’t need to analyze it with the intellectual mind, as that is counter-productive. All you need to do is listen and feel the sound vibration and you can go deeper and deeper into it. You can notice other things as well…the feeling of the beads, perhaps the feeling of entering into a different dimension altogether. Again, no need to analyze these things with the intellectual mind. Just notice things, while keeping the mind focused on the mantra.
  • You should clearly hear each word of the mantra that is uttered by you (low soft voice so as to not disturb others) which helps your mind to focus on the very activity you have indulged yourself in.

Every Sunday at around 6pm bhajans and kirthans dedicated to lord Krishna are played and

know what!!

All folks gather in the main temple arranged in straight rows/column dance in synchronisation with the beats of the music freely and all folks dance in the same manner as each of his fellow folk all in front of lord Krishna. Really a wonderful experience. Automatically joy is emitted within you as you dance with the flow of the music.

Then at 7pm comes the love feast (provided only for folks and not for general public) is a taste worth it (each Sunday different menu) in its large dinning hall, neatly arranged equi-spaced rows of carpet for folks to sit on. Pre love feast prayer honouring the food and all the people responsible behind the serving of this delicious food is thanked upon and the Lord's name is chanted 3 times thus starting the feast🍭

The menu on the day I went was
  1. Musk melon juice
  2. 2 poori's
  3. Carrot and paneer sabji
  4. Biriyani veg
  5. Raitha
  6. Gulab jamoon
Every minute I spent there was totally worth it.
May be you should try it too sometime.
